Premier Division Round 1 (24th April, 2010)
First XV
In a tough scrappy game in blustering conditions Quins fell to Souths 15-13 down at Seaford.
Starting the game with the wind Quins failed to convert pressure into points in the first 25 minutes with only a try to Osea Valentini and a penalty goal to Josh Moore. The scrum had exerted good pressure on the Souths pack and was clearly winning this battle with Souths winning at the lineout. Some solid defence in the last 10 minutes of the half saw Quins take a 8-0 lead at half time.
The 2nd half started well with some opportunities before Souths scored 2 tries in the space of 5 minutes to skip to a 12-8 lead. Quins backline then put on a good set piece move to have John Iosefo score from 30 meters out and the failed conversion had the team leading 13-12 with 10 minutes to go. Souths then responded with a penalty goal to lead 15-13 and Quins had the chance to snatch victory with a late penalty but it was wide of the mark. Strong games from TJ Lavea, Fonz and Pana Ravouvou.
Second XV
Playing Souths at home is always a difficult task and often comes down to the final whistle as the teams fight it out. This match was no exception with a strong cross wind making the conditions even more testing. The first half saw a tough battle with strong defence and neither team taking control of the match. Harlequins gave away a number of penalties which Souths were able to convert into points with a penalty before both teams traded penalties with South leading 6 – 3 at half time.
The second half began with Harlequins struggling to clear the ball out of their own half, putting themselves under pressure and then giving away a free kick. Souths took a quick tap and from the resulting ruck near the try line crashed over to score a try which they were able to convert. From the kick off Harlequins were immediately able to put Souths under pressure and a great individual run from Edwin Lusala split the Southern defence and he crossed the try line to score. The try was unconverted. The match was evenly poised and Souths were able to add another penalty to give themselves a slight cushion. Harlequins had all the work to do but after great set up work from Alofa Mika, he was able to put Micheal Rabachs into space. Rabachs beat 3 players but as he attempted to reach out to score lost the ball over the line. Harlequins then missed another penalty before more pressure resulted in a free kick and Greg Ellis was able to score from the resulting ruck. The try was unconverted. With only minutes to go, Harlequins simply ran out of time to score again, losing 13 – 16.
Team points: 3 – Edwin Lusala 2 – Chris Grellis 1 – David Moyise
